Story of Vayu Purana Ki Katha:

The Vayu Purana is named after Vayu Dev because it details the teachings of righteousness (dharma) as described by him during the Shvetakalpa. It is divided into two parts: Purva (first part) and Uttara (second part).

  • Purva Part: This section describes the creation of the universe and the genealogies of kings using various mantras. It emphasizes the significance of different months, with a special focus on the month of Magha, which is considered highly auspicious. It also discusses dharma related to charity and kingship, and includes details about living beings that inhabit the earth and sky.

  • Uttara Part: This section details the holy places along the Narmada river and extensively describes Shiva. It mentions that the northern bank of the Narmada is inhabited by devotees of Lord Rudra (Shiva), while the southern bank is home to followers of Lord Vishnu.

The Vayu Purana begins with the invocation "Narayanam Namaskritya," and its second verse praises Maharishi Vyasa, while the third verse describes devotion to Shiva. Chapter 98 praises Lord Vishnu, and mentions the avatars of Vishnu such as Dattatreya, Vyasa, and Kalki. Chapter 99, the longest chapter with 464 verses, covers numerous ancient and historical stories.

The Purana includes 160 verses on Shraddha (rituals for ancestors), 35 on Moksha (liberation), 22 on pilgrimage, 7 on charity, and 5 on Brahmacharya (celibacy). It also contains references to the Gupta dynasty and suggests a five-year cycle in one of its chapters. Chapter 87 discusses poetic ornaments (Geetalankaras) based on the rules of ancient teachers.
