Story of Garuda Purana Ki Katha: The bird king Garuda is said to be the vehicle of Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. Once the king of birds Garuda asked Lord Vishnu a question that there are many esoteric and mysterious things related to the condition of the living beings after death, the journey of the living being to Yama, the hells and births obtained due to various deeds and the plight of the sinners.
The wise advice given by Lord Vishnu to Garudaji to satisfy his curiosity is called Garuda Purana. It was only when Garud ji asked questions that deep secrets and supremely beneficial words after death were revealed from the mouth of Lord Vishnu himself. This Purana prescribed by Lord Shri Hari Vishnu is mainly Vaishnav Purana. Garuda Purana knowledge was narrated by Brahmaji to Maharishi Vedvyas. After that, Maharishi Vedvyas had given it to his disciple Maharishi Sutji and Maharishi Sutji had given it to Shaunkadi sages in Naimisharanya. Among the sixteen rites of Hindu religion, three before birth, four during life and one after death, the last one i.e. funeral rites, which is related to cremation and other rituals. According to ‘Matsyapuran’, the soul of the deceased remains in his residence and near his relatives for twelve days after death. The soul of the deceased also enters the body of the priest conducting the funeral rites in the form of a deity. According to the scriptures, the soul of the deceased listens to the story of Garudpuran so that it can attain salvation. According to ‘Pitrimedha Sutra’, just as a person attains victory in life by performing the rituals, similarly the deceased attains heaven by performing the last rites after death.
For every person, there are two sanskars in the form of debt which are mandatory to be performed, first - Jaatkarma related to birth and second - Antyeshtikarma.
